Week 4 Term 2

Week 4 Term 2

This term all the Year 2 classes are working together to put on a performance show. We will be spending sometime every week to practice. Our show is called 'There's a sunflower in my supper!'
At the end of the term, parents and caregivers will be invited to come and watch.

Daisy the cow has a dream – to grow a glorious garden ‘full of flowers and plants and trees and fruit and vegetables and everything’… but grumpy Mr Bull and all the other cows only want to grow grass for their supper. They give Daisy strict instructions only to buy grass seeds at the market, but on her way back, Daisy finds a mysterious seed. Scared of what the other cows might think, she hides it away to grow in secret, but absolutely nothing happens. Thankfully, Wise Old Owl is on hand to show Daisy what seeds need in order to grow. What will grow from the seed?

The students have been asked what part they would like to have in the performance. They may come home with lines, songs or dances to practice.

Week 3 Term 2

Week 3 Term 2

Last week we did a science rotation with our Vertical Team and did 6 different science experiments.

With Miss Bell we made butter....
With Ms Grech we made oobleck......
With Mr Collins we mixed baking soda with different liquids......
With Mrs Gilmour we made slime.....
With Mrs Winters we added mentos to coke.......
and with me, we melted crayons with a hair dryer........
At the end of it all, we had a vote as to which was their favourite experiment and the mentos and coke experiment won. So for the next couple of weeks we will be looking into this experiment futher and experimenting with some of their wonderings. Such as.... I wonder what would happen if we added a whole packet of mentos? and I wonder what would happen if we used a different type of soft drink?

For our Big Book this week, we are reading a non-fiction book about the different states of matter. This will help us to categorise things into either a solid, liquid or a gas.

For maths we are continuing to look at weight and using language such as bigger than, smaller than, heavier and lighter. We have some scales in our classroom which we are using to compare 2 objects with.

Week 2 Term 2

Week 2 Term 2

We started this term by reading 'Have you filled a bucket today?'.
This is a lovely book about being positive to others and we have focused mostly on giving compliments to people. I'm hoping to carry on with this theme throughout the term.
News will be run slightly differently this term. The person who is our C.E.O for the day, will be the person who shares news. They will also be our focus person for the day that we will be complimenting and filling their bucket. If your child is the C.E.O, ask them what compliments they got.................

This week we will be starting our science topic for the term. Without giving too much away, ask your child on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday what science experiment we did and what happened.

Coming up this week:
Monday - Science experiments
Tuesday - At 10am we will be having a tsunami evacuation practice. To reduce the disruption time to lessons, we are only going to walk up to the bottom of Polkinghorne and not congregate at the Playcentre.

Week 1 Term 2

Week 1 Term 2

Welcome back to Term 2. It was exciting to come back to nice new walls. Our classroom is looking very smart and as the term goes on, more work will go up for you to look at.

This term we will be working more closely with T4. We have changed the timetable and will now be running 'Investigation time' in the morning where children will have the opportunity to explore their own interests and wonderings, as well as time to practice core literacy and numeracy skills.

Week 10 Term 1

For the past 3 weeks we have looking at what makes us unique. This week we are looking at who works in our school. Our school is very big with a huge number of students and staff, but in order for a school to run smoothly it takes more than just teachers for it to work.
We also have:

Week 9 Term 1

Week 9 Term 1

As part of our Inquiry, our focus for this week will be:
looking at how our school is unique. We are very lucky at Whangaparaoa Primary to have some of resources that are available such as: the bike track, a new library, a school hall, a native garden, playgrounds, a sandpit, a school pool, a PE shed, a bike shed and many more.......
You may like to discuss with your child what school was like when you went to school and how it has changed.


We have reading in class 5 days a week. Reading takes different forms and includes our poem on a Friday and our library visit on a Thursday. Your child will have a book to read 3 days a week and on Friday they will bring home a book of their choice to read with you.
If the book seems too easy, don’t worry, the whole idea is for reading to be enjoyable and achievable. If the book is too hard or your child is being uncooperative, just read it to them or take turns reading pages. After reading it is important to talk about the story and select one or two interesting words to discuss the meaning of. Please make sure they pack their book bag in their school bag everyday!
